Seahorse Fact
Hippocampus is another name for seahorse. As these small yet charming creatures are found abundantly in the coral reef. They are extremely difficult to see. The ocean provides a majestic home and hiding places for the seahorse. Having a head and neck suggestive of a horse. The seahorses also feature segmented bony armor. And with an upright posture and a curled prehensile tail. They are masters of camouflage. As their colors change automatically to blend in to their surroundings. The Seahorse eyes work independently. This works well in the wild where they have to hide from predators by holding motionless, holding onto their coral with their tail, and watching. Seahorse is the name given to 46 species of small marine fish.
The Artist’s View
Joseph Cantin has a passion for wild life. He watches videos of the different species that he paints. As, he educates himself on the subject be begins to paint. Joseph is imagining the environment and personality of the animal. Specifically on this project he focused on the hippocampus. Or better known as the seahorse. As Joseph began to imagine a environment he would like this painting to reflect. He has chosen the most colorful place. The coral reef. And having so many options of different species of sea horse he chose the hippocampus erectus (lined seahorse). As Joseph began to paint he played calming ocean sounds to influence his painting. After completion. He knew others would share the passion invested into this amazing creature.
